Carson City, NV – State and business agencies are coming together to celebrate National Homeownership Month with a free home buying seminar on Saturday, June 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the offices of RE/MAX Professionals, 5905 S. Virginia Street, Suite 300, Reno.

Attendees will learn about how the loan process works, how to overcome credit challenges, how choosing the right real estate agent can help in our competitive market, different financing options, getting your offer accepted, and the other steps involved in becoming a homeowner.

The seminar will highlight Nevada Housing Division’s (NHD) Home Is Possible program, which provides a non-repayable down payment grant of up to five percent for Nevadans purchasing a home for less than $400,000 with a household income of less than $95,500 and a minimum credit score of 640. The buyer must meet standard underwriting requirements, complete a homebuyer education course and live in the home as a primary residence.

Though her rent was increasing, Priscilla Castillo didn’t think she earned enough money to buy a home of her own. She also had some credit issues and was struggling to come up with the money she needed for a down payment. She spoke with a lender to see if she would be able to qualify for a home, and that’s when she found out about NHD’s Home is Possible Down Payment Assistance Program. Through the program, she was able to obtain the money she needed and she closed on her first home in June 2016. She lives there with her two daughters, her niece and her grand-nephew.

While her mortgage is a little higher than her rent was, she has much more house, along with a front and back yard where she can plant flowers and enjoy some privacy. “There’s enough room for all of us here and we’re all very content,” Priscilla said.

“Homeownership Month is a time to reaffirm the important role that ‘home’ plays for our families and the neighborhoods where they live,” said HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan in a release. “Owning a home has historically been the principal vehicle for Americans to build equity, start businesses, put kids through college, and retire with comfort and dignity. After all we’ve been through, we must stand by an institution that has helped build our nation’s middle class.”
